Advance Parole is a travel document that allows certain individuals to leave the United States and return without applying for a visa, while a qualifying immigration application is pending.
Advance Parole is not a visa and does not guarantee reentry. It only allows you to seek permission to return to the United States.
Advance Parole permits temporary international travel for individuals who are in the U.S. and have a pending Form I-485, Form I-589 or another qualifying application.
Without Advance Parole, leaving the United States may result in the automatic abandonment of a pending application, unless the applicant holds a valid status that allows travel.
Advance Parole is most commonly required if you have a pending:
Advance Parole may also be required in other pending immigration situations, depending on the applicant’s status.
Note: Advance Parole does not apply to pending nonimmigrant status applications. If a nonimmigrant extension or change of status is pending and the prior status has expired, departing the United States will generally result in abandonment of the application.
Advance Parole is requested by filing Form I-131, Application for Travel Documents, Parole Documents, and Arrival/Departure Records.
